FCA UK Culture Conference Event Summary & Next Steps

At the recent Financial Conduct Authority March 2018 meeting in London, Ethical Systems Executive Director Azish Filabi and collaborator Celia Moore participated in panels featuring fellow experts discussing current, pressing issues in regards to culture, regulation, ethics and compliance in the financial sector.

Close to 200 delegates attended – a mix of industry leaders, academics, culture and change experts, and regulators. The day started with a keynote speech from FCA chief executive Andrew Bailey, followed by four sessions focused on the following questions:

  • What constitutes a good, healthy culture for financial services?
  • What role should regulators and regulation play in managing culture?
  • Remuneration and beyond – what are the most powerful motivators of behavior?
  • How can we deliver real cultural change in financial services?

Ethical Systems contributed to a series of essays in connection with the conference, in essays written by Linda Trevino, Azish Filabi, and Celia Moore, on topics relating to transforming culture in financial services.  At the event, Azish participated in the panel on “Managing culture – the role of regulation” which connected to the questions on “What role should regulators and regulation play in managing culture? [and] What role should regulators and regulation play in managing culture?”

Celia Moore was part of a panel that asked “Is there a ‘right’ culture?” which looked at the question of “What constitutes a good, healthy culture for financial services?”
